The Iranian president says his country welcomes nuclear negotiations with major powers, describing the Geneva talks 'positive'.
At a press conference with his Turkish counterpart Abdullah Gul in Istanbul on Thursday, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said nuclear talks with Group 5+1 are on the right path.
Saeed Jalili, Iran's chief nuclear negotiator, and Javier Solana, EU foreign policy chief, held talks in Geneva on July 19. Representatives from major countries including US senior diplomat William Burns were present at the talks.
Ahmadinejad reiterated Iran's position that Tehran welcomes negotiation based on the 'common points' stated in the two packages presented by Iran and the Group 5+1.
"This could be a base for reaching an agreement between Iran and the West over Iranian nuclear issue," he insisted.
Regretting that certain major powers are trying to link Iran's nuclear energy activities to a weapons program, he said, "This is while the powers have stockpiled atomic weapons."
Ahamdinejad noted that the Iranian people will not give up their nuclear rights.
In another part of his comment the president noted that the US government is using baseless allegation against Iran to impose sanctions on the Islamic Republic.
